Sponsored by Roger F. Wicker (R)
USMMA Athletics Act of 2026
Lets the Transportation Department create a nonprofit corporation to support the US Merchant Marine Academy's athletic programs.
Tradeoff
Establishes a structure for a nonprofit to run USMMA athletics and collect sponsorship revenue. No direct federal spending authorized by the bill itself.
What's in it
Less than $500,000 in net direct spending over 10 years (2026-2036), plus $1 million in spending for federal administration over 2026-2031.
The $1 million is federal administrative overhead to set up and oversee a nonprofit corporation that will collect and spend its own revenues from athletic operations; the corporation's own cash flows from tickets and licensing are counted in the federal budget but are expected to roughly offset each other, making the net federal cost minimal.
