Sponsored by John Barrasso (R)
988 Lifeline Location Improvement Act of 2026
Orders studies on sending caller location data to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
Tradeoff
No immediate cost or funding mechanism. The bill requires the FCC and GAO to study whether and how to share caller locations with crisis centers, weighing privacy risks and technical feasibility.
What's in it
Less than $500,000 in federal costs over 2026-2031, with negligible net cost to the FCC after fee collection.
The $500,000 is just the federal cost for the FCC and GAO to study and evaluate geolocation challenges for the 988 lifeline; any costs to telecommunications companies would be minimal and tied only to potential future fee increases to cover this federal work.
