IHS Workforce Parity Act of 2024
Would have let Indian Health Service scholarship and loan recipients meet their service duty through half-time clinical work.
Tradeoff
Would have let scholarship and loan recipients serve half-time instead of full-time, but at double the required service period. Recipients who break the agreement would owe damages converted to full-time equivalent.
What's in it
Adds $157 million in discretionary spending over 2025-2034, with no effect on the deficit from direct spending or revenues.
This funds a modest expansion of existing IHS scholarship and loan repayment programs, meaning about $157 million over ten years would go toward helping health workers serve tribal communities.
The Senate passed this bill by on December 17, 2024. The House never voted on it before the Congress ended, so the bill expired with the 118th Congress.
