Youth Poisoning Protection Act
Bans consumer products with 10% or more sodium nitrite by weight.
Tradeoff
Restricts sales of high-concentration sodium nitrite products to protect youth from poisoning. Exempts drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, and food products from the ban.
What's in it
Costs $2 million over 2025-2030 for federal implementation and enforcement.
The $2 million is just the federal cost to enforce the ban — the policy's real impact falls on manufacturers and retailers who can no longer sell consumer products with 10 percent or more sodium nitrite by weight.
Passed the Senate by on August 3, 2026 — now in the House.
