Alaska Native Village Municipal Lands Restoration Act of 2023
Would have ended the requirement that Alaska Native village corporations hold land in trust for future towns.
Tradeoff
Would have let village corporations take back trust land by formal resolution with residents. Would have ended the duty to place more land in trust for future municipalities.
What's in it
Costs less than $500,000 to implement over 2025-2029, with no effect on direct spending or revenues.
The under $500,000 figure is only the federal cost of carrying out the change; the real impact falls on Alaska Native village corporations and the State of Alaska, which no longer have this land conveyance obligation.
The Senate passed this bill by on December 18, 2024. The House never voted, and the bill expired with the 118th Congress.
