HR 556 Passed House — in Senate

Sponsored by Robert J. Wittman (R)

Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act

Blocks federal agencies from banning lead ammunition and tackle on public lands and water.

Tradeoff

Hunters and anglers can use lead ammunition and tackle on federal land and water. Agencies can only restrict it if wildlife decline there is proven to be caused by lead and the state approves.

What's in it

See official bill text

Costs less than $500,000 over 2026-2030 to implement; revenue impact is indeterminate.

The $500,000 is just the federal administrative cost to review existing prohibitions and implement the new rule — the policy's real impact falls on hunters and anglers (who gain access to lead ammunition) and on wildlife in areas where lead ammunition causes population declines but is not currently prohibited.
