Unrecognized Southeast Alaska Native Communities Recognition and Compensation Act
Allows five Southeast Alaska Native communities to form corporations and receive federal land.
Tradeoff
Grants about 115,200 acres of federal land in Southeast Alaska to five Alaska Native urban corporations. The communities—Haines, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Tenakee, and Wrangell—were previously excluded from the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.
What's in it
Net federal cost is negligible over 2026-2036; statutory pay-as-you-go procedures apply due to potential impacts in periods beginning 2037.
The bill conveys federal land (timber parcels in the Tongass National Forest) to five Alaska Native communities; any implementation costs are minimal and offset by timber sale receipts that reduce the net federal outlay.
Passed the House by on June 2, 2026 — sitting in the Senate.
