WARN Act
Would have directed the GAO to study how well weather alert systems reach the public.
Tradeoff
Would have ordered a federal study of weather emergency alerts, with a report due 18 months after enactment. Would have required no new programs or spending changes.
What's in it
Adds less than $500,000 in discretionary spending over 2025-2029 (5 years), with no effect on direct spending or revenues.
The under-$500,000 figure is simply what it costs GAO to study weather alert systems and write a report, not the cost of changing or running the alert systems themselves.
The House passed this by on December 9, 2024. The Senate never voted on it before the Congress ended.
