POLICE Act of 2023
Makes assaulting a law enforcement officer a deportable offense for non-citizens.
Tradeoff
Would have expanded deportation grounds to include non-citizens who admit to assaulting officers, even without conviction. Would have created minimal federal cost because it affected only a small number of cases.
What's in it
Minimal federal cost; CBO did not quantify a specific dollar amount as the policy affects only a small number of deportation cases.
The federal cost to enforce this rule is negligible because it only marginally expands an existing deportation authority to cover admissions of assault in addition to convictions, affecting a small population.
The House passed this 255-175 on May 17, 2023. The bill expired with the 118th Congress without Senate action.
