Servicemember Residence Protection Act
Prevents squatters from claiming ownership of servicemembers' homes during military service.
Tradeoff
Protects servicemembers' property rights by blocking state squatter laws during active duty. Requires VA to publish guidance on securing vacant property and tenant rights.
What's in it
Adds less than $500,000 to federal spending over 2025–2035; no effect on deficit.
The $500,000 or less is purely the federal cost to update the VA website; the policy's real burden falls on states, which must change their adverse possession laws to exclude military service periods, but CBO found this state-level cost does not exceed the federal unfunded mandate threshold.
