Youth Poisoning Protection Act
Bans the sale of consumer products with 10% or more sodium nitrite by weight.
Tradeoff
Restricts access to high-concentration sodium nitrite products to protect against accidental poisoning. Exempts drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, and food products from the ban.
What's in it
Costs $2 million over 2025-2030 to implement and enforce a federal ban on consumer products containing 10 percent or more sodium nitrite by weight.
The $2 million is just the federal cost to administer and enforce the ban—the real economic impact falls on manufacturers and retailers who must stop selling or reformulate products containing high concentrations of sodium nitrite.
The House passed this 378-42 on April 29, 2025. The bill is in progress in the Senate.
